Taking its title from a children’s tune and its tale of crime and redemption from numerous American indie dramas, Row Your Boat is a sweet and not altogether predictable tale of just lately introduced convict Jamey Meadows (Jon Bon Jovi) trying to get it appropriate the second time around. Refusing help from his brother and previous spouse in crime (William Forsythe), he will get a work as a census taker to conserve enough money for an apartment. On his rounds he meets pretty Chinese immigrant Chun Hua (Bai Ling), the sad trophy wife of a 60-yr-outdated businessman, and spends his off hrs teaching her English just for her firm. Accurate love? Probably not, but she could be Jamey’s second possibility if he can keep clear of his brother, whose debts to a regional loan shark push him to at any time more desperate schemes. Author-director Sollace Mitchell never really avoids the clichés of the smalltime city crime drama, but his refreshingly matter-of-reality direction balances the hazardous with the mundane. There’s practically nothing glamorous in these minimal heists or in Jamey’s efforts to preserve his self-respect and desire alive even though residing out of homeless shelters and killing time on the streets. Possibly which is why this modest film received lost in the shuffle: it avoids the effortless drama of violent showdowns to discover the actual struggle of surviving the streets. –Sean Axmaker
